Bio
A native of Hampton Roads, Virginia, “Bill Jr.” attended St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church and Day School and then Hampton Roads Academy in Newport News. He received a BA degree from the University of the South, having majored in Classical Languages and Music. Bill, Jr. continued on to earn a Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music and Case-Western Reserve University, respectively. After working in the maintenance department at Hamner Development Company throughout his teen years, Bill, Jr. departed Hampton Roads following graduation to work in other markets and other fields. He taught music at the University level and served as an organist/choirmaster for a corporate-sized Episcopal Parish. While in school he worked from 1986 to 1977 as a “semi-professional” staff member at Camp Seagull, a division of the YMCA of the Triangle based in Raleigh, North Carolina. Later becoming more involved with the pipe organ building industry, he ultimately rose to the position of Tonal Director for the Wicks Pipe Organ Company of Highland, Illinois, a position he held until 2006. In that capacity, he was charged with the design, marketing, tonal development, and, finishing of custom-made instruments, built for institutions around the globe. Bill, Jr. continues to consult independently, on a selective basis, assisting institutions with the process of selecting and purchasing instruments. In 2010, he founded Hamner Pipe Organs of Williamsburg for the purpose of building custom pipe organs for customers seeking his expertise. “My dad taught me, ‘Figure out what you enjoy doing and then figure out how to channel that enjoyment into serving others and the common good. THEN, your efforts will naturally morph into a rewarding career’. At Hamner, whether we are helping a professional solve his real estate problems, or building a real estate portfolio to help a family meet its life goals, we look at every task through the lens of service. Helping people through service, makes for a fulfilling career.
