Originally from Honolulu, Hawaii, Val grew up in Raleigh, N.C. attending North Carolina State University and the University of N.C. at Pembroke. During the Fall of 1977 Val relocated to the Grand Strand area to assist his father in the family business, Land Surveying and Aerial Mapping, completing projects for the Corp of Engineers, various government agencies, and local developers. In 1980 Val embarked on a career in Retail Sales as an assistant manager with Cape Craftsmen, Inc. a/k/a Welcome Home, Inc. in the Pawley’s Island Community. Val advanced to Senior District Manager with the company operating over 150 Outlet Stores in 32 states. Ending a retail career spanning 17 years Val entered the Commercial Real Estate profession.
