Stephen Cumbie is Chief Executive Officer and Principal of NVRetail, Inc., NVCommercial, Inc. and the Metro Realty Group. Founded in 1981, this NV Group of Companies is comprised of commercial real estate investment, development, and services firms whose completed projects exceed $500M in the Mid-Atlantic region.
Prior to establishing NVCommercial, NVRetail, and Metro Realty Group, Mr. Cumbie served as President of Elm Street Development, a residential land development company (formerly NVLand). He is a founder of all "NV" branded companies, including NVR, a publicly traded home-building company that operates through the Ryan Homes and NVHomes trade names. From 1973 through 1977, Mr. Cumbie served as Vice President and Project Manager for Venture Management Incorporated, a resort development firm located in Atlanta, Georgia.
Mr. Cumbie previously served on the Board of Directors of NVR Inc., Potomac Bank of Virginia, the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce, and the UNC College of Arts and Sciences Foundation. He was President of the Northern Virginia Chapter of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP) in 1991 and served as a member of the national NAIOP board from 1999 to 2004. Mr. Cumbie was appointed to the Virginia Public Buildings Board by Governor Mark Warner and the Virginia Port Authority Board of Commissioners by Governor Tim Kaine.
Mr. Cumbie serves in leadership roles in numerous community, business, and charitable organizations in the Washington area, including the Chair of INOVA Health System through 2012. He has also served on the boards of Micronics Technology, SonoMedica Inc., and First Portfolio Holding Corp.
Mr. Cumbie graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of North Carolina in 1970 and received a Masters in Business Administration from UNC in 1973. From 2008 to 2011, Mr. Cumbie served as the Executive Director of the Center for Real Estate Development at the University of North Carolina's Kenan-Flagler Business School as an adjunct professor where he co-taught the real estate development course in the MBA program.
