Bob, a 1959 graduate of the University of Portland, began his sales career marketing textbooks for McGraw Hill Publishing Company. With four company transfers in 10 years Bob and Karen developed an interest in real estate. In 1970 Bob and Karen purchased Whitfield Brothers, a small real estate company with a history dating back to 1935. Throughout the next 28 years they built the company, eventually selling the residential division to NRT, the parent company of Coldwell Banker in April, 1998. At that time, Bob and Karen renamed their commercial company, Coldwell Banker Commercial Bob Bernhardt Associates, and moved to a new Downtown Vancouver location.
