I was living in Hawaii with a background in the hospitality industry and was ready for a change. It was the late 1980's, when Japanese investors owned more than 60% of the state's hotel rooms, 28 of the 46 private golf courses, with Hawaii receiving a whopping one-fourth of Japanese investment in the U.S. from 1985-1990. My hotel background actually served me well because I realized that running a shopping center or investment property was very much like operating a hotel... except the guests stayed longer.
That philosophy gained me attention by having the focus on helping develop tenant success. Successful tenants pay rent their rent on time and will pay increases. Simple philosophy, huge reward.
Before finally settling in Florida, we lived in the Virgin Islands, Hawaii and even Africa. I'm married to an amateur competitive surfer whose passion for surfing has provided a lifetime of adventure travel and international exposure. Our commitment to giving back was highlighted by our joining the Peace Corps in 1993 and serving in Swaziland, Africa for 2 years. I served as a Chief Financial Officer, working with NGO's in drought relief, building community gardens and eventually help develop a program for the growing crisis of street children.
This lifetime of experiences provides me with the right aptitude AND attitude to not only meet whatever challenges may occur in an investment portfolio, but can maximize a Buyer or Seller's financial opportunities.
