John M. Azarian is the owner of The Azarian Group, L.L.C., a shopping center management and development company which owns/manages/develops 18 shopping centers, 13 in Northern New Jersey and two in New York State, plus two office buildings, one medical building and two apartment complexes. The Azarian Group's properties total approximately 1,300,000 square feet in size and include approximately 350 tenants.
Mr. Azarian is also the owner of Azarian Realty Co., a commercial real estate brokerage firm, which specializes in the leasing and property management of commercial properties. He is a licensed real estate broker in the states of New Jersey and New York.
Mr. Azarian graduated from Saddle River Day School, Saddle River, New Jersey. He graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management, where he was active in numerous clubs and activities, including his role as an Editor of the school newspaper.
Mr. Azarian has been an active member of the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) since 1981. As such, he has attended numerous conferences, seminars, conventions, institutes and other professional forums on shopping center matters. He has also attended and graduated from ICSC sponsored educational seminars and programs including the University of Shopping Centers and Management Institute I and Management Institute II. Mr. Azarian was awarded the prestigious Certified Shopping Center Manager (CSM) designation from the ICSC in 1991 and the Certified Retail Property Executive (CRX) in 2013.
He is the president of the John M. Azarian Memorial Armenian Youth Scholarship Fund, which was created in memory of his late father and which awards scholarship grants to underpriveleged college students annually.
Mr. Azarian has written numerous articles for professional publications, including “Commercial Lease Law Insider”; “The Real Estate Newsletter”; "NJ/PA Real Estate Journal" and others. He has been interviewed about Shopping Center matters on Channel 7 Eyewitness News, as well as numerous newspapers and magazines such as “The New York Times”; “Newark Star Ledger”; “The Record”; “Poughkeepsie Journal” “Hyde Park Townsman”, “The Town Journal”, “AIM Community News”, "NJPA Real Estate Journal", "Commercial Lease Law Insider" and others. Mr. Azarian has been featured in "Fortune Small Business (FSB)" (May, 2004), Home and Garden Television (HGTV), "Personal F/X" on F/X, the "Don and Mike Radio Show" and "Worth" (March, 2008). He was also involved with the development, production and casting of a television commercial about a large shopping mall and also had a starring role in the commercial. Mr. Azarian has served on numerous Bankruptcy Creditors’ Committees, as Chairman as well as an active member.
Mr. Azarian is a past active member of St. Mary’s Armenian Church, Livingston, New Jersey and was an elected member of the Parish Council, where he served as Church Treasurer for two terms, member of the annual Food Festival Committee, and Youth Group Advisor, which he started at the church. He is an active member of St. Leon Armenian Church, Fair Lawn, New Jersey where he has also served as a Sunday School teacher. Mr. Azarian is a former President of the Alumni Association of Saddle River Day School, Saddle River, New Jersey, where he served an unprecedented six year term, as well as a former member of the school’s Auction Committee, Marketing Committee, Golf Outing Committee and co-chair of the Saddle River Day School's 50th Anniversary Committee. He Member of the Board of Trustees of at St. Thomas Aquinas College, Sparkhill, New York since 2009 and also an Adjunct Professor in the Business School since 2008. He has been an Advisory Board Member of the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Ramapo College in Mahwah, New Jersey since 2010 and a Director of the Board of Hope and Heroes Children's Cancer Fund of Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City since 2011.
