R. Gordon Darby, a husband, father and grandfather, is an honorably discharged member of the military having served in the Coast Guard Reserve. He graduated Moultrie High and Newberry College. Mr. Darby began his career as a member of a mortgage loan department and then moved on to the profession of real estate. He became a licensed South Carolina Real Estate Broker and a General Contractor. He founded Darby Development Co., Inc. in 1968, and began exclusively brokering residential real estate and insurance. Over the next few years, over one thousand homes were built by the firm. The next phase for Darby Development centered on developing mobile home communities and multifamily communities. Mr. Darby has served as a President to the Charleston Trident Home Builders Association, earned his RAM Certification, and served on the Charleston Trident Board of Realtors. Darby Development was also a key, founding member of the Charleston Apartment Association. At present, the firm owns/manages 1655 apartments (14 apartment communities) and four commercial sites totaling 275,000 square feet. The firm also owns numerous large parcels of land which are being mined for sand and clay, and several parcels are under development for single family housing.
