Donald Griffin, Jr. has gained an understanding of Bloomington’s residents, neighborhoods, and wider community through being a lifelong resident, real estate professional, and a realty owner for over 32 years and 2500 transactions. Griffin’s professional work is complemented with an extensive record of civic engagement in the areas of racial justice, community development, and the arts.
Don was appointed Deputy Mayor of Bloomington by Mayor John Hamilton in March of 2021 and served in this role through December 2022. During his tenure, he collaborated with city & state leaders on the implementation of policies and programs related to affordable housing; investments in the arts; addressing homelessness and much more.
Don has served as President of the City’s Redevelopment Commission (RDC), President and co-Founder of the Monroe County Black Democratic Caucus, Vice President of the Monroe County Branch of the NAACP, Board Member of the Monroe County History Center, Board Member of the Bloomington Board of Realtors, Board Member of the Eskenazi Museum of Art, and many other nonprofit organizations. Don’s past service includes being on the boards of Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County, Lotus World Music Festival, among many others. Griffin also contributed to the development of the City’s Growth Policy Plan and has served on the Bloomington Hospital Revitalization Committee.
Don and his wife, Nicole, have one son. Their son, Dexter, is a senior at Indiana University studying at the Jacobs School of Music in the Opera department. Nicole, Dexter, and Don all attended University School, a public school right here in Bloomington.
