Training and Support
Part of the journey to becoming and Independent Operator is successfully completing an extensive and self-driven training program. On average, training is completed in 6 months.
Grocery Outlet's Operator training program includes:
- Working and training under an existing Grocery Outlet Independent Operator
- 16 guided sessions with a dedicated learning coach
- Online training and store simulations
- Assigned projects and evaluations
- Planned experiences at additional stores for further exposure to our model
History
We’ve come a long way and we’re just getting started. In 1946 our founder Jim Read opened the doors to his first military surplus store. 1973, Jim Read signed the first Independent Operator agreement and we have been growing ever since. Today, Jim Read's company has evolved into a publicly traded grocery chain with 470+ independently operated locations.
Ideal Candidate
Our ideal Independent Operator Candidates have:
- 4 years of ownership, retail management or multi-unit retail management experience
- Experience overseeing a large team including hiring and training
- Detail-orientated, analytical, ability to think quickly, and extremely results-orientated
- Creative problem-solver
- Experience with merchandising displays
- Interest in autonomy and being able to make your own decisions for your retail store
