Gifts, Antiques, Art & Specialty Food Products

THE CLOWN is a retail store based in York, Maine, selling wine, art, antiques, gifts and specialty food products. Wine represents approximately 85% of total sales.

The store, named THE CLOWN, after a little bistro in Paris, has been operating in several locations over the last 26 years in Maine. There have been stores in Stonington, Blue Hill, Belfast, Portland and York. Thus, it is an established 'brand'. And recognized by many who have been customers over the years. The York store is the only location currently in operation. Others were sold or closed based upon simplifying the organizational structure geographically.

The York location has been in operation for 16 years and continues to robustly increase its sales and customer base.

The store carries wines from around the world with significant collections from the US, Italy and France and an impressive array of sparkling wines. Other countries include, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Lebanon, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Austria, Germany and Croatia. Recently added are a variety of vermouths, fortified wines, dealcoholized wines along with mixers. Labels represented in the store approximate 400 and currently we offer an extensive special order service to our customers for wines not available on our shelves.

Food products: There is a special emphasis on imported products from Italy – pastas, sauces and spreads from Livorno and balsamic vinegars from Moderna. These are complemented by local shortbreads, chocolates, caramels and various other specialty food products.

Gifts: Gifts include books, puzzles, artist cards, French textiles, olive wood items, Italian ceramics, Indian baskets, candles, soaps, drink glassware, wine accessories, and more.

We have a large and very loyal year-round base of customers allowing the store to be viable during the winter season. Sales are boosted in the summer months by the summer residents. Social media has added a healthy boost to our sales by attracting tourists visiting in the summer and fall months. For perspective, November and December are our strongest months followed by July and August.

The store is visually appealing due to the eclectic array of products. THE CLOWN prides itself in offering the customer a unique shopping experience, while not overlooking the basic principle of attentive and knowledgeable service. Our customers are loyal and appreciative. They are our largest investment in and our best advertising.

Competition
THE CLOWN is the only wine store in the town of York. The surrounding area is made up of the communities of York Beach, Cape Neddick, York Harbor and York Village. The population is 12,529 which grows to 52,000 during the summer. The average household income is $129,496. There are 212,691 residents in York County where the average income is $102,855 and the median age is 46.8. Growth & Expansion
Currently THE CLOWN relies on word of mouth, an Instagram presence and Yelp & Google reviews for marketing. Additional marketing efforts would undoubtedly enhance its visibility. The demographics of the area offer infinite possibilities. Monthly wine tastings could be resumed resulting in a boost the the daily sales. (We have not resumed wine tastings, since COVID.) Considering product expansion incorporating cheeses which is often a request of our customers - another possibility.
Financing
No seller financing. Landlord is willing to offer a lease to new owner.
Support & Training
A long time employee and well as myself are willing to introduce a buyer to our customers and operating systems to whatever extent is necessary. A continued presence of a wine shop in York is important to us and the success of any new owner is in our and the community’s interest.
Reason for Selling
It's time to retire and simplify my life.
