Have you Seen The Hag Today?I began this business in 2000. I learned to make soap in 1995 with animal fats. At the time I wasn't eating meat and didn't like the smell of the process. I decided to start exploring making soaps without animal fats. I read books on soap making without animal fats and had some success and some bad failures. I kept track of every batch in my notebook ; recording temperatures, ingredients, sources, my successes and failures. I created the laughing Sea Hag logo after the name of an old boat we had. I trademarked the logo.I wanted something that would be fun and memorable.
I opened Sea Hag Soaps & Art Mercantile in an old barn in 2000. We originally bought the old barn for me to be my art studio where I planned to create art and make some soaps to sell. I ended up representing over 400 fine local/regional artists and fine crafts people along with continuing to make my soaps. The soap business grew. I had little time to create my own art, but found like minded people and created a loyal customer base. We sold the barn in January 2020 and relocated my business to Binghamton,NY right before COVID in February 2020. I built another web site before we left the barn and thankfully it grew during COVID. At the time I wasn’t sure if my business would survive, but luckily I had a solid base of loyal customers who stuck with me.
I'm looking to make an exit strategy and retire. I'm almost 70 yrs.old. At one time I had over 50 wholesale accounts with more revenue, but when COVID came I dropped most of the wholesale accounts because of difficulty getting packaging for skin balm and bottles for our bug spray. Right now,I have no employees. I have not done much local advertising, just social media with Facebook, and a few Instagram accounts. What this biz needs now is marketing. The product quality and foundation is there.Once people try the products, they are hooked. Read the reviews on web site www.seahagsoaps.com
Regarding pricing of the business- Not all handmade soap products are the same quality. My soap line includes, Vegan soaps, Goat milk soaps, Shampoo bars and Pet soap. I have spent 24+ years developing the brand, the logo, the website, the packaging, 50 original recipes, a loyal customer base and a country-wide mailing list. This is a niche business.
Before COVID I had Revenue of $60-80K per year of just the Sea Hag products in a retail setting, with most of my effort spent on managing 400 other vendors. Sea Hag products have a 65-70% gross margins at retail, and 30% gross margins at wholesale, and it is a recognized brand that can be grown more. 150K price is not a valuation, it's what I want for the business.
I've been in business for over 24 years. The recipes I've created include over 30+ soap recipes, 4 different skin balms, deodorant (not on website),lip balms, and a non toxic natural pleasant smelling bug repellent. The web site is half of the business that certainly could be grown more with good marketing. The products have a high repeat customers base. Thanks for your time and interest in my business. Feel free to call to discuss further.
