Spring Branch Medical Supply got its start in 1985 and arose from the Poonawalas noticing a gap in the services offered by home medical equipment companies at the time. Ali Poonawala, RJ's father, was recovering from surgery after sustaining a back injury. To help her husband, Ana Poonawala went to a local medical supply store looking for assistance and to ask questions about what she could expect with her husband's recovery. She didn't get the answers she was looking for. Seeing that their community was in need of a home medical equipment and supply store that was focused on meeting the needs of every customer that walked through the doors, the Poonawala opened their own store, called Pulmonary Assistance at the time.
