The MRIP is a secure work environment and home to several light industrial enterprises. The MRIP's is largely surrounded by Forever Wild land, which is wilderness area controlled by the State of Alabama and protected from development in perpetuity. In addition to this natural protective buffer, the Sarland Police Department is located just outside the entrance of the MRIP. Saraland's geographic location affords truck drivers the opportunity to avoid congestion on I-10 caused by the tunnels in downtown Mobile. Eastbound drivers can cross the Mobile River via the Cochrane Bridge north of downtown and connect with I-10 on the east side of the tunnels. West bound drivers can access I-10 where I-65 terminates, again avoiding bottlenecks caused by the tunnels.
